Sunday Night -- July 31st 2005

What a busy sale! Thanks everyone for coming by & shopping. I hope everyone had a good time. We have just cleared out the store are getting ready to put out our fall goods. Right now the store is empty (take a look at the picture below).
Amazingly by Monday morning the store will be full again. Hope you can come by & check out what's new. Its Sunday night at 10:15 PM. We will be here for a few more hours. If you come on Monday count on us to be a little tired -- but the quality of the clothing will be amazing!

Our Summer 50% Off Sale

Once again it's time for our twice yearly 50% off sale. Why is this sale different from other sales? First, practically everything is half off. No, the sale doesn't apply to the web store, dollar-a-pound or the transfer booth. But it does apply to everything in the main Garment District store -- and that's a huge selection of clothes, shoes & accessories. Second, there is no fuss about this sale. No gimmicks. Everything is 50% off.
Why do we do it? Because unlike most stores we completely rotate our store twice a year. Except for a few stock items such as wigs & feather boas we take everything out of the store after the sale & replace it with fresh stock that nobody but our staff has seen. To make way for these new goodies, we need to rotate out what's in the store today. Thus we have a big sale, with a huge discount.
Some people ask me -- when is the best time to shop at The Garment District? The answer is either at the sale or in the weeks right afterward. And it depends on what you want. If you want the best value then shop during the sale. Some stock items will be 1/2 off this weekend & full price next week. Items like American Apparel t-shirts (which we carry year-round) are already nearly half what you would pay at their Newbury Street store. At our sale they are another 50% off. Come in and get these items now -- why wait? But I also seriously recommend shopping after the sale. Though the prices are higher, nobody has seen these clothes. There is no presale. We just put out thousands of unique pieces overnight. The Monday after the sale can be a little chaotic, but everything is fresh and there are always great quality items.
Other than the sheer excitement of shopping at The Garment District for Halloween, this is the best time to come by. And the weather forecast this weekend is perfect for shopping -- cool & dry. Hope to see you..

Boston Globe Story

Dear Friends of the Garment District:

On Sunday July 3, 2005, the Boston Globe ran an article that talked about the sale of the building located at 200 Broadway which houses the Garment District. Many of you have asked the Garment District’s staff questions about the news and have expressed your concern about what will happen to the store. While there are many things that are still uncertain, there are a couple of things that are known.

First, the Garment District will continue to operate, with no interruptions or changes, for the rest of 2005. At the end of July we will have our renowned “Half-Off Sale” where nearly every item in the store is available for 50% off our regular low prices. At the beginning of August we will completely restock the store with new inventory including clothing, shoes and accessories. We will continue to add new merchandise throughout the fall. In October, we are looking forward to having a bigger selection of Halloween merchandise than we’ve ever had before.

Second, if and when the property at 200 Broadway is redeveloped, the partnership that now owns the building is obligated to provide the Garment District with the same amount of retail space that the store currently occupies.

Third, the Garment District has no plans to close or to move from 200 Broadway. The Garment District has operated in this location for 19 years. We have developed very close ties to the Cambridge community, and we intend to be here for at least another 19 years.

We are deeply appreciative for all the kind words, support and concern that so many people have expressed since the Globe article ran. We firmly believe that the Garment District has the most loyal, creative and caring customers of any store in the area. We will do our best to keep you informed of any changes in our situation by providing updates on our website (www.garmentdistrict.com) if we have any additional news. Thank you, always, for the support that you have shown and continue to show for the Garment District. We look forward to continuing to serve you for many, many more years.

Sincerely,

Liz Donovan
Store Manager
